In today’s fast-paced world, where stressors seem to multiply by the day, prioritizing mental health has become imperative. Yet, despite the growing awareness surrounding mental health issues, accessing affordable therapy remains a challenge for many. In this blog post, I will delve into the importance of affordable therapy and why it should be a fundamental right for everyone.
Mental wellness has gained a positive increase in awareness over the past few years, with mental health, counselling, mindfulness and overall wellbeing being a hot topic in various areas of our society. Mental health advocates have gained traction on social media, large corporations are introducing wellness programs and mental health days, and several health apps and digital tools, such as mood tracking and guided meditations, have surged in popularity. The growing awareness surrounding mental health issues has sparked vital conversations, challenged stigma, and prompted a shift towards prioritizing emotional well-being as a fundamental aspect of overall health.
Despite this positive enhancement, many individuals struggle to obtain the mental health support they need. In Canada, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (2024) documented that “while mental illness accounts for about 10 per cent of the burden of disease in Ontario, it receives just seven per cent of health care dollars. This shortfall, totaling almost $1.5 billion, creates an ever-widening gap in the system's ability to deliver timely intervention and adequate long-term care.” Moreover, 33% of Canadians over the age of 15 have reported unmet needs regarding their mental health (CAMH, 2024).
Similarly, in the United Sates, a 2018 national survey on drug use and health indicated that approximately 5.8% of American adults had an unmet need for mental health services over the past year (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2019). This same survey outlined various factors in which prevented individuals from obtaining the services they required, cost being the highest rating at 39% (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2019).
Therapy should not be a luxury reserved for the privileged few. Affordable therapy breaks down financial barriers, fosters inclusivity, and empowers individuals to prioritize their well-being, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Like physiological health, the maintenance and treatment of an individual’s mental health should be recognized as a right.
With the evident surge in mental health issues throughout our society, affordable therapy provides an opportunity to prevent a negative impact in our communities. Rather than relying on emergency interventions for severe cases, individuals can have the opportunity to proactively address mental health issues, preventing unnecessary suffering and reducing significant burdens on our communities and healthcare systems. Furthermore, without the financial barrier of unaffordable therapy, we can foster long-term mental wellness, promoting therapy as a consistent and supportive environment for not only addressing difficulties, but also for personal growth and self-discovery. Investing in one’s mental well-being can greatly enhance individuals’ overall quality of life.
The increased awareness around mental health has assisted with diminishing the stigma surrounding it, although affordability of therapy plays a crucial role in the de-stigmatization. Accessibility holds a great importance in allowing for an open discussion on introducing therapy in one’s life as it sends a strong and powerful message that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. When therapy is accessible, it is less intimidating and allows for normalization. By normalizing therapy, we build a more compassionate and understanding society where we can feel safe to seek the support we need without fear of judgement.
